A new season of the award-winning TV series Inside California Education is now airing. Inside California Education is produced by PBS KVIE and airs on PBS stations across the state. Last week, the latest episode of Season 5 premiered on PBS KVIE. This episode “features stories about a community school in Orange County, a sportsmanship initiative in San Diego County, a compelling program to strengthen school culture and racial understanding in Madera County, plus a profile of Los Angeles County Superintendent Debra Duardo.”

CALSA Welcomes First Female Co-Executive Directors

SACRAMENTO - On Saturday, August 1, 2020, the California Association of Latino Superintendents and Administrators (CALSA) Board of Directors took action to appoint Co-Executive Directors to lead and continue to build the strong growth and momentum of the non-profit organization.

Martha Martinez and Ofelia Lariviere were selected to serve as Co-Executive Directors. Ms. Martinez and Mrs. Lariviere will share responsibilities for the position and will work closely with the CALSA Board on strategic initiatives. Both are long time CALSA veterans and experienced educational leaders. They both have served as past CALSA Presidents, former Superintendents and have strong relationships throughout the state.

Mrs. Lariviere brings twenty-eight years of administrative experience to the position of Co-Executive Director. Ofelia has served as a Superintendent, CALSA Board President, and Executive Board Member for ACSA and a mentor to many CALSA members. Ofelia shared her excitement for the position, “ It brings me great joy to continue to serve CALSA and give back to our familia and great organization which I am deeply committed to. I look forward to leading and collaborating alongside Martha Martinez and our Board of Directors.”

Ms. Martinez brings twenty-five years of administrative experience to the position of Co-Executive Director. Martha has served as a Superintendent, CALSA President, and is a well-established member of the educational community. She has been recognized as CALSA Region 5 Superintendent of the Year and 2018 Association of California School Administrators (ACSA) Region 10 Superintendent of the year. “I am excited for the grand opportunity to build upon the CALSA’s successes for the tomorrow we want.” asserted Ms. Martinez. “ Seguimos adelante, juntos y unidos por la causa!”

“We are so excited for our new Co-Executive Directors”, CALSA Board President Ivan Chaidez asserted. “We will continue to innovate and grow as an organization, especially during these fluid times. The CALSA Board looks forward to working with both Martha and Ofelia, as we reinforce our commitment to serving the leaders and students of California. We are more keenly poised to develop meaningful engagement strategies and bring more value to the current and aspiring leaders in our great state.”

The appointment comes as CALSA is growing member opportunities and building upon existing programs. The organization is expanding support for Superintendents through the Superintendents’ Circle, increasing the CALSA Women’s Leadership Network (CALSA-WLN), and enriching our Mentoring program. This is the first time that the Executive Director position will be held by women. Mrs. Lariviere and Ms. Martinez are the right leaders to guide CALSA and nurture important relationships throughout the state.

A message from CALSA President Dr. Jacqueline Perez

CALSA’s Board and I would like to express gratitude to Dr. David J. Verdugo for his dedicated service to CALSA and our members.  Under his direction, CALSA has grown, attained so many accomplishments, built strategic relationships, and is positioned for continued success.  We appreciate his resolute leadership and distinguished professional service. Personally, I have grown as a leader and have been guided by his seemingly endless words of wisdom and inspiration.  “We need to go slow to go fast,” he would often remind our Board. His advice rings true again as we are faced with his transition.

Finding our next Executive Director may be a challenge, but as Dr. Verdugo would put it, it is CALSA’s next “opportunity for success!”  Dr. Verdugo’s recent announcement has led the Board to discuss the creation of a selection process and to determine criteria for our next Executive Director.  Dr. Verdugo leaves big shoes to fill, but not without having established systems and strategic partnerships and secured resources for our next Executive Director to grow and redefine our present part-time Executive Director position.

The Board is targeting the Summer Institute or soon thereafter to complete a re-examination of the goals and expectations for the future of our Executive Director position.  By then we hope to also define the search and hiring process that will be followed. The Board will be interested in candidates familiar with and dedicated to advancing CALSA’s goals, mission and values.  The Board is open to candidates with other interests or employment, who possess organizational and leadership skills that would allow them to serve in a part-time Executive Director position. We anticipate desiring candidates with the vision and determination to grow the organization to eventually sustain a full-time Executive Director position.  More details about the process and timelines will be forthcoming. In the meantime, we ask our members and strategic partners to identify and encourage leaders you know to consider and apply to become CALSA’s next Executive Director.

The Board and I are optimistic that we will identify and select an Executive Director to guide us through our next phase of growth.  Dr. Verdugo’s inspiration and legacy will continue to guide us in this effort. We have been blessed and privileged to have gained so much from him.

Please join the Board and me in extending mil gracias to Dr. Verdugo.  Take time between now and at our Summer Institute to extend your hugs, well-wishes and appreciation to Dr. Verdugo. Make sure you are with the CALSA familia at the Summer Institute in beautiful San Diego to honor Dr. Verdugo with a proper and well-deserved farewell.

Abrazos,

Dr. Jacqueline Perez
CALSA 2018-19 President
